Max MacKenzie was brought up in Zimbabwe where he attended Plum tree school. After that he read for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg). He did a brief spell as a school teacher before entering the commercial world as an accountant. Over eight years he held a broad range of financial positions across several different industries (retail, financial, leisure and services) working in both the UK and Zimbabwe. His last commercial position was that of financial manager in a service industry, which he held for three years.
Eleven years ago he came to Johannesburg to study for his MBA and really enjoyed the experience. On graduation he was offered a position on the staff to lecture accounting and finance. During his long association with Wits Business School Max has held several positions and taught across a broad spectrum of levels. He gets great enjoyment from demystifying introductory finance and the more specialised work he does in Strategic and Project Finance.
Max is currently working as a freelance educator and continuing to pursue his passions for finance and developing people. He is also enjoying searching for a more obvious link between the classroom and the operational success of the organisation as he believes this is an opportunity for improvement in most training and development initiatives. His interest in the numbers currently sits with statistics and analytics as a bridge between the boardroom and operational KPI’s. Adrian Steed gained hands-on experience as a broadcaster in the South African Electronic Media for 40 years. He worked on Radio from 1957, and then, when Television was introduced in 1976, he made the transition to what is currently the most powerful medium in the world.
No sooner had Television started than Adrian began to get requests from public relations practitioners for help with clients who were anxious about forthcoming media encounters, especially those involving TV appearances. During the past 25 years Adrian has helped hundreds of business people present themselves to advantage in any situation, more particularly when making business presentations or being interviewed by the press or on radio and television. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this unique training arena and, while he is quick to point out that he can’t change people’s upbringing and education, he can and does achieve remarkable results with people after just a few hours, encouraging them to adopt new skills and techniques. It’s work that he enjoys, and he says that to watch people who need his help put his advice into practice is extremely gratifying and fulfilling.

Jayashree Naidoo obtained a Diploma in Higher Education at the University of Natal and specialised in Psychiatric Education she then held the position of Head of Clinical Teaching in the Department of Psychiatry at the King George hospital. While in Natal, she served on the Committee for Regional Human Resource Development as part of the RDP and Development Programme for Health Professionals.
Jayashree moved to Gauteng to take up a position at the Medical School of the University of the Witwatersrand, where she lectured for 5 years, her speciality being in the Human Behavioural Sciences and their application for the health professional.
She was involved in curriculum development and lectured in the Faculty of Health Sciences. While employed at the University of the Witwatersrand, Medical School she was exposed to private sector people development. Jayashree recognised the opportunity to make a shift in her career path, to use her skills and expertise in a different environment as a executive/life coach, management trainer and facilitator. She continues her relationship with the University of the Witwatersrand as an external examiner and moderator. Terence Okeke Taylor worked on Wall Street as a Financial Analyst at Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette (DLJ) prior to attending HBS. He was responsible for the financial modeling and valuation analysis for capital raising deals for several firms across several industries during his two years at DLJ.
He then worked with CitiGroup in its Emerging Markets businesses in India, Mexico, Russia, and Singapore as a Global Emerging Markets Management Associate (GEMMA). He was then promoted to Vice President and headed Citibank Indonesia’s Risk Analysis Unit. Mr. Taylor then made his first career switch and joined the entrepreneurial ranks when he became CFO for an Internet start-up looking to build a portal and a pan-African ISP business. When the dotcom bubble busted and funding dried up for Internet start-ups, Mr. Taylor remained an entrepreneur, moved to South Africa and made his second career switch to management training and development.
He has been a facilitator, executive coach and lecturer since 2001. He has guest lectured at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) since 2004 in Personal Mastery, Leadership, Management, Strategy, and Finance and was appointed to the GIBS faculty in January 2006.

Justin Spencer-Young specialises in VALUE. Researching it, understanding it, measuring it, finding it and creating it. Justin has lectured in finance and accounting for 6 years and talking value and value creation is what he enjoys most. He holds a BSc (Building) (Wits) and an MBA (Wits) and calls himself “a builder at heart” after spending several years in the commercial construction industry as a project manager.
In 2003 he started his own corporate finance consultant business and has been lecturing in the field of accounting and finance since 2006. As part of his consulting business he has been involved in numerous start-ups, growth business and corporates including Anglo American and Barloworld.

Prof. Rasoava Rijamampianina (Rija) is a Professor of Business Administration at the Wits Business School (South Africa). He was the Director of the Senior Executive Programme for Southern Africa – a joint initiative of the Wits Business School and Harvard Business School (USA) – and the former Academic Director at the Wits Business School (South Africa). He holds a DSSC and a DESCA from the National Institute of Accounting Science and Business Administration (Madagascar), a MBA from Otaru University of Commerce (Japan), and a DBA degree from Hokkaido University (Japan). Before joining Wits Business School, he was a Senior Research Associate in the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Hokkaido University (Japan). Rija has also been an auditor-consultant at Delta Audit Deloitte & Touche (Madagascar) for many years and the overseas consultant of the Indian Ocean Resources for Quality.
Rija’s research and teaching interests include multicultural/diversity management, organisational learning, organisational change, and human capital management. His work has resulted in numerous publications in scholarly journals and international conference proceedings. Christopher Whittle is a consultant and facilitator in the fields of strategy implementation, enterprise risk management and corporate finance. He has a particular interest in public sector finance and management with a strong African focus. He has an Honours degree (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria focusing on African Politics and Revolutions. Christopher has consulted for a number of listed- and non-listed private sector companies in the fields of enterprise risk management and has lectured for Wits Business School and Alexander Forbes over the past 4 years. Christopher has also facilitated risk and strategy projects in public sector entities such as the City of Johannesburg Treasury Department, Department of Trade and Industry subsidiaries and numerous municipalities. His most recent engagements required establishing the risk framework and standards for large corporations and facilitating the risk identification process.
Christopher is a preferred facilitator in the fields of Corporate Finance and Budgeting and travels extensively in Africa and the Middle East for consulting and teaching engagements.
Christopher filled senior credit positions in ABSA Commercial Bank and Nedbank Corporate. He has also been the CEO of various companies specialising in asset finance and has extensive experience in financial structuring and credit. He was awarded the Nedbank and Institute of Bankers prizes for best student in Credit Risk Assessment and was involved in preparing students for the Institute’s examinations in the field of credit risk management. He is currently enrolled for his PhD in Public Policy and is reading in the field of fiscal decentralisation.
Lloyd Chapman is an executive coach, organisational architect and certified personal fitness trainer. He has 22 years business experience in leading, managing and implementing strategy, large scale organisational change, mergers and acquisitions, business process re-engineering, workflow implementations and various other IT projects. He specialises in executive coaching, coaching executive teams, work based learning and stress management. He has coached Executives and executive teams in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius and Ghana. He was the first person in the world to qualify with a Professional Doctorate in Executive Coaching through Middlesex University and the National Centre for Work Based Learning in the United Kingdom. For his doctoral thesis he developed and researched the Integrated Experiential Coaching Model, an experiential learning model that integrates strategy formulation and implementation in the context of managerial complexity. His post-doctoral research interest (in collaboration with the University of Cape Town’s Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine) is in how high levels of stress affect an executive’s heart rate variability, which in turn inhibits optical cortical (logical) functioning.
He lectures at the Stellenbosch Graduate Schools of Business in Coaching and on their Executive Development Program. As well as being a quest lecturer at the University of Cape Town, the DA Vinci Institute for Technology Management, the University of South Africa’s Department of Industrial Psychology and Prince Sultan College in Saudi Arabia. He is a member of the Coaching and Mentoring Society of South Africa (COMENSA) and co-chaired the Research and Definitions Committee.
Darrel Orsmond is a Principal in the Banking Practice and joined Genesis Analytics in 2010 after a long career at Standard Bank, Personal and Business Banking. During his tenure at the bank, he was a member of Standard Bank’s Retail Executive Committee for 12 years, as well as a member of the Group Strategic Technology Forum and the Group Payments Committee, and was a sponsor of the Services Orientated Architecture Project. He also chaired the bank’s New Products Committee, MIS Committee and Retail Pricing Committee, and served as Head of Retail Pricing. In particular, he gained extensive experience in running income statement and balance sheet functions, and in product development and pricing.
Darrel has a rich understanding of the retail banking value chain, especially of the integration of capabilities and processes needed to support technology systems and to deliver on organisational goals. He has worked with the shaping and design of the business and operating model for Standard Bank (Retail). Since joining Genesis, Darrel has worked on a growth strategy for a bank in East Africa, advising on the segment approach, as well as on income statement and balance sheet scenarios for capital provision. This assignment required a multi-country plan in order to provide an operating model that would be consistent with the client’s organizational strategy.
Darrel also led a project to develop a set of strategic plans for a bank in Botswana, which required a focus on leveraging the bank’s key capabilities in order to grow and improve its profit performance. More recently, he advised a bank in West Africa on its inclusive banking strategy and its approach to mobile banking. He has also been involved in assessing the debt counselling industry in South Africa in order to recommend appropriate steps to improve the current performance for all stakeholders. Nicola Tyler is South Africa’s renowned expert in the field of lateral thinking. Richard has led assignments with banks and financial institutions for over 10 years. Prior to that he worked in debt capital markets at Deutsche Bank. He gained in-depth insight into the needs and requirements of the financial sector in South Africa when he was the Chief Director of macro- economic policy and financial oversight at the National Treasury. At the World Bank, Richard played a key role in the development of South Africa’s macro-economic strategy and medium-term planning framework. He has also worked as an advisor to the Ugandan Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. Dr. Simon Shapiro was the chairman of the Bond Exchange of South Africa, and Group Treasurer and Chief Information Officer of Investec Bank before setting up a consultancy in London where his clients include Royal Bank of Scotland, Macquarie Bank, First National Bank, and Investec Bank. Recent consulting assignments include: risk, finance and treasury transformation programmes; innovation processes in retail banks; and peer-to-peer financing. Simon’s speciality is in financial markets, innovation and strategic transformation. Invariably these have a high reliance on information technology where Simon has a solid track record. Simon is unique in that he has developed and headed a full treasury, managed the enterprise IT function and aligned the disparate operations of Investec over two decades of intense growth.

Prof. Steve Thomas is Professor of Finance and Course Director for the EMBA and Dubai MBA at Cass Business School, City University of London. He joined Cass in February 2007, after being Professor of Financial Markets at Southampton University since 1996, and prior to that at the University of Wales, Swansea, from 1992. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and in a recent review was ranked 11th in Europe for finance research. Since 1988, Steve has been consulting editor of a range of credit publications for FT Interactive Data. Sean Temlett is a lecturer in strategy, marketing and innovation at the Wits Business School. He holds a MBA from WBS and achieved distinction in his research thesis titled “Customer Satisfaction and how it affects Profitability in SA Banks”. He is also a visiting lecturer at UCT GSB and a research fellow at Duke, The Fuqua School of Business.
Sean has 14 years experience in retail and investment banking, culminating in the development of a full transactional banking capability for Investec Bank and a gold medal award for the bank from The International Retail Banker for the most profitable new retail banking product in 2000. Prior to that Sean spent 10 years in retail banking where he became the youngest ever recipient of the Permanent Bank chairman’s award for the most outstanding employee in the group and recipient of the Old Mutual Business Builder of the year award. Together with Gail Kelly (now CEO of Westpac in Australia) he negotiated and implemented South Africa’s first co-branded Visa Card; the SBSA Ops in Africa Voyager Visa product suite.
Sean joined WBS in 2002 and in 2004 and 2007 he was awarded the WBS Award for the best full-time lecturer at the School. Sean completed a year-long sabbatical at Duke University where he attended the PhD programme in strategy and innovation. He is currently a PhD candidate at Wits completing a longitudinal investigation of endowment traps in SA banks.
Chris Muller has taught on the Wits MBA programme since 1999, and on the Wits Finance Honours elective since 2010. He runs elective courses on corporate finance, portfolio management, equity markets and investment, financial modeling and derivatives. He has special interests in teaching modeling in Excel and timeseries databases. Chris has twice received the best part-time lecturer of the year award at the Wits business school. Chris teaches on the GIBS DBA programme, and last year, taught the Wharton MBA class.
After a nine year period working for what is now JPMorgan, Chris spent the next ten years consulting to the sell and buy side, providing financial, teaching and software expertise. Chris has recently consulted to Nersa, the government employees’ pension fund board, and the CFA Institute.
As a licensed fund manager, Chris has managed a private quants equity fund for more than 13 years. He also takes focused positions in the markets, trading both futures and options. Since 2008, Chris has been managing the Southern African portion of an African fund run out of London.
Chris has published several articles in the Investment Analysts Journal. The Investment Analysts Society has awarded him the annual award for co-authoring the best article in the Journal in 2006, 2008, and 2011.

Besides being an experienced facilitator in Business Strategy, Marketing, and Corporate Governance & Risk, Andrew is Director of Executive Education for Wits University’s School of Economic and Business Sciences (SEBS). He works in close collaboration with Wits Commercial Enterprise.

Mark Peters was born and educated in Ireland. After 9 years as a commercial banker he joined Wits Centre for Developing business where he was a consultant and faculty in small business.
He was appointed MD of GIMT and Henley Business School in 1997 where they were awarded the top international business schools in South Africa.
In 2002 Mark took over as head of Executive Education at Wits Business School, a position he worked in for 12 years. In this role he interacted and worked with many of the top 100 listed and unlisted companies in SA.

In recent years Trevor has become involved in evaluation of information efficiency and management of knowledge in a wide range of operations. This has included consulting to management on knowledge creation, dissemination and use of information within organizations, assessment of document creation and output strategies and project management of systems, supporting software and hardware installations for both small and nation-wide organizations.

David Makovah is a director of Tactus Advisory, a boutique corporate finance firm. He heads up the Tactus Institute which conducts capital markets, finance, economics, and related consulting and executive education at leading South African Business Schools and corporates. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Rhodes University) and Honours in Accounting Science (UNISA). He is a registered Chartered Accountant.
He began his career by serving articles at KPMG in Parktown Johannesburg.
Subsequent to this he joined Nedbank’s Risk Division focusing on the commercial and corporate sections of the bank including structured finance and public financing. David was seconded for 6 months to Old Mutual Asset Management in London to assist with the launch of their first two hedge funds. This deepened his expertise in financial services and banking.
In 2004 David returned to public practice as a manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in their Banking and Capital Markets division. He was responsible for auditing and consulting with private and public treasuries, and Corporate Finance divisions. His clients included Eskom Treasury, the South African Reserve Bank, Rand Merchant Bank Corporate Finance, and the Bond Exchange of South Africa.
As from 2005, David has pursued the entrepreneurial route culminating in the founding of Tactus Advisory of which he is a founder and director. He has won multiple awards including Executive Education Lecturer of the year 2012/2013 at the Wits Business School, MBA Lecturer of the Year (Part Time) 2015. David is highly regarded in the banking and financial services sector in South Africa and beyond, having conducted engagements in countries including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Dubai, United Kingdom, Tunisia, Egypt, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and India.
In 2015 David completed a PhD in Project and Infrastructure Finance that focused on holistic measures for the more effective execution of infrastructure and project finance initiatives in sub- Saharan Africa. He is a passionate proponent of Africa’s potential through people, an avid reader and traveller.

Prof. Walter R. J. Baets past Dean/Director of the Graduate School of Business of the University of Cape Town, Allan Gray Chair in Values Based Leadership. Previously he was Associate Dean at Euromed Management Marseille, first for programs, then for research and eventually for social responsibility and innovation. Before joining Euromed Management, he held academic positions in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, and he has more than 10 years of corporate experience. He graduated in Econometrics and Operations Research at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and did postgraduate studies in Business Administration at Warwick Business School (UK). He was awarded a PhD from the University of Warwick in Industrial and Business Studies and a Habilitation (Senior Doctorate) of Paul Cezanne University, Aix-Marseille III, France (on the quantum interpretation of innovation). He has been a Visiting Professor in France, Belgium, India, Russia and the US. Most of his professional experience was acquired in the telecommunications and banking sector. He has substantial experience in management development activities in Russia and the Arab world.
From the very beginning of his academic career he has developed a keen interest and research output in the consequences of complexity (theory) on management, leadership and innovation. Already in 1998, he published “Organizational Learning and Knowledge Technologies in a Dynamic Environment” with Kluwer Academic a profoundly researched academic investigation in complexity theory and the impact on organizational learning and knowledge management in particular.
Many of his publications have deepened this understanding. He was amongst others invited, also in 1998, to be guest editor of a special issue of Accounting, Management and Information Technology on Complexity in Management. He was the author of “Complexity, Organisations and Learning: the quantum interpretation of business”, published in 2006 with Routledge. He co-authored with Gert Van der Linden “The Hybrid Business School: Developing knowledge management through management learning”, published by Prentice-Hall in 2000 and “Virtual Corporate Universities”, published 2003 by Kluwer Academic.
Along with Bob Galliers, Walter co-edited “Information Technology and Organizational Transformation: Innovation for the 21st Century Organization” also published in 1998 by Wiley. In 1999, he edited “Complexity and Management: A collection of essays”, published by World Scientific Publishing. Recently his latest book was published with Springer (2005): “Knowledge Management and Management Learning: Extending the Horizons of Knowledge-Based Management”. Makgathi is a registered Arts Therapist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, she has taught psychology at two universities (Vista University- now University of Pretoria, and Rand Afrikaans University- now University of Johannesburg). She has worked as a therapist and coach, and performed professionally on stage. She has post graduate degrees in Psychology, Speech and Drama and Anthropology at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and Vista University in Pretoria. She received a Masters Degree in Dance Movement Therapy at Antioch Graduate School in New Hampshire (through a Fulbright Scholarship), and her Doctoral Degree in Psychology at Rand Afrikaans University, in Johannesburg.
Her work centres on personal development, and the self within the context of the larger team/community/system. The paradigm she holds is appreciative and strength-based, oriented towards the belief that we have the capacity for the betterment of the self. Inquiry and reflection are used as essential tools for the enhancement of the understanding and appreciation of self, in order to serve oneself and others. Meaning and purpose (or the search thereof) form a cornerstone of this framework.
Makgathi works in the NGO sector with women, and young people. David Bohm said “The most important thing going forward is to break the boundaries between people, so we can operate as a single intelligence.” That’s what Burgert does. He has extensive experience in designing and delivering creative and participative processes that shift human behaviour from being rigid, disconnected and unproductive to being adaptive, innovative and integrated.
Burgert is a registered Organisational Psychologist with the South African Health Professions Counsel of South Africa. The topic for his Masters’ research was the use of Improvisational Theatre practices for creating a climate for team innovation. In 2010 his research article, entitled “Improvisational theatre as team development intervention for climate for work group innovation” was published in the SA Journal for Industrial Psychology. He has also presented workshops at national and international conferences on innovation, collaboration, coaching and learning design.
Burgert has facilitated workshops on topics such as adaptive leadership, team innovation, collaborative creativity, vision and values alignment, facilitation and coaching skills and customer service at business schools such as the Gordon Institute for Business Science (GIBS), Wits Business School and the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business (GSB), as well as companies such as SAB Miller, Siemens Health Care Diagnostic, Discovery, Deloitte, The Spar Group and Mediclinic.
Burgert is one of 28 certified Applied Improvisation practitioners in the world. Applied Improvisation is the practise of applying improvisation skills to situations in business and organisational life. It loses its connection to theatre performance and forges a new relationship with work performance. To provide an even more solid foundation for this practise Burgert grounds the methodology in the latest research in Neuroscience. He is an improvisational theatre actor and teacher.
He studied improvisational theatre at the IO theatre in Chicago USA and is part of the longest running Afrikaans improv comedy group Lagnes. Burgert is a family man. He is married to the beautiful, courageous and creative Lucille, mother of their twin daughters and son.

Grant is the CEO of IC Growth Group, and Infochoice Growth (Pty) Ltd. He is also a Visiting Professor and a part-time Senior Lecturer in Strategy & International Business. He has a background in strategy, leadership development and general management, and global experience in financial services, management consulting and corporate education, with extensive experience in Australia and South Africa. Grant specialises in strategy development and delivery, change management and in leadership performance and growth in executive programme delivery. He has a particular interest in strategic behaviour and organisational dynamics. After finishing his honours degree in Computer Science at the University of Cape Town, Grant moved to Australia, where he worked as a vice president for Citibank, and as a partner for the Centre for Corporate Strategy.
He returned to South Africa in 1997 as a partner at Accenture. In 1999, he established Netchoice, an ecommerce infomediary service, followed by Infochoice, a research, education and consulting organisation, and IC Growth Group, which focuses on strategic insights and leadership development. He has served as a faculty member of Citibank’s Asia-Pacific Banking Education Institute, and Duke Corporate Education’s Global Learning Resource Network. Barney Jordaan holds a BA (Law) LLB (cum laude) and Doctorate in law from Stellenbosch University, South Africa and was admitted to legal practice in 1982. He was appointed in 1983 as senior lecturer in law at the same university teaching contract law, intellectual property law and employment law. He was promoted to full professor of law in 1990, a position he held until 1997, when he entered practice as a specialist in the areas of employment relations, negotiation, mediation and conflict management. He is currently professor extraordinaire at the Graduate School of Business of Stellenbosch University (USB) where he teaches negotiation, conflict management and mediation on the MBA and executive education programmes. He is also teaching fellow at the Graduate School of Business of the University of Cape Town. At the USB he heads up the school’s Africa Centre for Dispute Settlement. The Centre is an African hub for academic research, development and teaching of dispute settlement theory and practice. One of its main activities is the training of civil / commercial mediators. Barney also holds appointments at Vlerick Business School in Belgium and the University of Nova Garcia in Slovenia.
Apart from his academic involvement, Barney is a director and co-founder of Maserumule Consulting, Learning & Organisational Growth, a leading South African consulting firm with offices in Cape Town and Johannesburg. He advises clients on negotiation strategy and preparation, business re-organisation and restructuring, employment law and employment relations, conflict prevention and resolution, and collaborative business practice. His clients span several industries, including media, insurance, retail, mining, shipping, fishing, banking and telecommunications. He has published widely and is co-author of a number of leading academic and other works.
He is a senior arbitrator and mediator, having been involved in ADR since 1987. He is certified by the International Mediation Institute in the Hague and the ADR Group (UK) as commercial mediator of international standing. Since May 2011 he acts as external consultant to the World Bank Group’s Office of Mediation Services. He is listed in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 Who’s Who Legal (Commercial Mediators) of the International Bar Association, one of five in South Africa. He is regional representative of the International Bar Association’s Mediation committee, board member of the African Mediation Association and sub-Saharan representative of the International Association for Conflict Management.
Negotiation and conflict resolution
David successfully managed a large government department during South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy, established negotiation training and consulting companies and has taught thousands of students across four continents.
David brings to teaching and coaching well-grounded knowledge of human behaviour, and a wealth of negotiation and conflict resolution experience spanning most public and private sector disciplines. Having taught extensively in Africa, Europe and Asia, he has developed a sensitivity for and understanding of culture as an important determinant of business success in a global economy. Over the past 20 years he has, apart from his well-proven teaching expertise displayed considerable entrepreneurial skills in, establishing numerous negotiation training and consulting companies, and very successfully restructuring numerous companies. The legacy he is leaving by virtue of his different teaching and coaching endeavours has spawned a constant steam of testimonials from course participants that have derived great vocational and personal benefit. Furthermore, he has, together with the highly respected international expert on creativity and innovation, Dr Kobus Neethling, inspired governments and corporates to adopt innovative new ways of approaching their business.
David qualified cum laude as Psychologist and Educationist at Stellenbosch University. He practiced psychology for 15 years, spent 10 years in government as Director-General of Communication during the transition from apartheid to democracy, established a number of negotiation, training and consulting companies, and has since 1996 taught negotiation, conflict dispute resolution and leadership at business schools in South Africa, Belgium, Russia, China, Ireland and Hungary, often receiving best teacher awards.
He regularly attends negotiation courses at Harvard University and MIT, courses that inter alia focus on training in corporate negotiation, dealing with angry publics and difficult business conversations.
Apart from leading and transforming a government department, he was responsible for the design and implementation of the largest opinion polls ever in South Africa; polls crucial to plotting a peaceful transition to a non-racial, non-sexist democracy. He worked with Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, as well as Marti Atasari on the Namibian voter education campaign; 97% registered Namibians casting their vote.
In 1993 the Public Relations Institute of South Africa recognised his communication skills when adjudging him runner-up to the CEO of Toyota (South Africa) for the Communicator of the Year Award
Adjuct Associate Professor of Negotiation and Conflict Mangement at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town
Brian Ganson is Adjuct Associate Professor of Negotiation and Conflict Mangement at the Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town. He also holds appointments as Head of the Africa Center for Dispute Settlement and Extraordinary Associate Professor at the University of Stellenbosch Business School; Senior Fellow, Council on Emerging Market Enterprises of the Fletcher School, Tufts University; and Research Associate with the Center on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding of the Graduate Institute Geneva. He has trained business executives, diplomats, attorneys and civil society leaders in negotiation and conflict management through the Harvard Negotiation Project and other leading institutions for more than 25 years.
An expert on socio-political risk management, conflict prevention, collaboration and third party roles in post-conflict and other complex environments, he consults to companies, governments, international organisations and civil society. Examples of his advisory work include assessing with an international gold mining company conflict risks in a West African country; exploring with a development NGO strategies for mining affecting communities in the DRC; conducting a 360° stakeholder survey to identify the barriers to development of a comprehensive extractive industries policy in a Latin American country; and helping ameliorate social conflict with a development agency in Kosovo engaged in large-scale agricultural development projects. He has counseled UN agencies on their operations in the context of violent socio-political conflicts; advised UNDP on their extractives industries strategy for Africa; and was Chair of the Expert Panel for the evaluation of the work of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in post-crisis transition. His work helps multi-national corporations, development agencies, and inter-governmental organizations meet their full range of goals in emerging economies and post-conflict societies.
His forthcoming book (with Achim Wennmann) is entitled Business and Conflict in Fragile States. Among other publications, he is also editor and lead author of the book, Management in Complex Environments: Questions for Leaders.
Brian Simelane is the founder and head of Learning & Simulations (Pty) Ltd – (LearningSims) started its existence in 2006 as the training division of SwitchMark Consulting CC. SwitchMark was started by 6 former RAU students (Ayo Kolawole, Brian Simelane, Dalton Lunga, Lebo Senokoanyane, Nathi Nala and Vuyisile Mfecane). Sue has successfully run her own training and development company for the past 15 years. She is very involved in youth skills development and runs a number of life skills programmes. She is also involved in mentoring young ladie.
Sue is passionate about skills implementation and the behavioural changes that are necessary to ensure success for staff. She is passionate about excellent Customer Service and enjoys imparting her knowledge in this area. Sue has worked with different levels of leadership within organisations. Sue has worked in the sales environment for many years and has been involved in developing brand new sales teams into high-powered teams. Finance and Values
After graduating with a Bcom degree from Wits University, David joined the family financing business. He later returned to the Wits Business School to study for an MBA and graduated with first class passes in a number of subjects.
He then joined an IT company as an account manager, taking clients through the sale and implementation of various products. Thereafter he joined a consulting company, and specialised in value creation. He developed financial models that reflected the operation of the company. This enabled it to do “what if” analysis to measure the effect certain decisions would have on value created in the business.
David, on the request of the Wits Business School, agreed to lecture on their Certificate Programme for Management Development, which he has been doing on a free-lance basis since 1997. He has also lectured on the MBA and many other programmes.
David is the author of the book, Basic Business Calculations published in 2001. He specialises in ridding delegates of their fear of numbers and understanding how numbers work in business and in the sales process. The book has sold in excess of 17,000 copies in South Africa.
David is currently involved in a small training business, as well as assisting small companies to develop and undertaking 1 on 1 management coaching.
David won the best part-time lecturer of the year award at the Wits business school for 2010. David will show you how to make things “count” and is well known for his easy lecturing style, motivational effect and sense of humour.

Professor Mthuli Ncube is the Chief Economist and Vice President of the African Development Bank, and holds a PhD in Mathematical Finance from Cambridge University, UK, on “Pricing Options under Stochastic Volatility”. As Chief Economist, he oversees the Economics Complex, which is focused on the process of knowledge management within the bank and with its partners, and general economic strategic direction of the bank. In this regard, he looks after the Development Research Division, Statistics Division and African Development Institute, all of which are headed by Directors who report to him. That is, knowledge generation, knowledge acquisition, knowledge dissemination, and knowledge sharing, and capacity-building. As a Vice President, he is a member of the senior management of the Bank and contributes to its general strategic direction.
Before joining the Bank, he held the post of Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg, South Africa, and before that was Dean and Professor of Finance at Wits Business School. He led Wits Business School to a point where it was rated at 45 globally by the UK Financial Times in 2007.He has extensive experience as an Investment Banker, and was founding Chairman of Barbican and Selwyn Capital, which are involved investment banking.
Prof Ncube was also a regulator, and served as a Board member of the South African Financial Services Board (FSB), which regulates non-bank financial institutions in South Africa.
He is also Chairman of the Board of the African Economic Research Consortium, a network that develops economists in Africa, with which he has been associated for the last 20 years.
He is also Chairman of the Global Agenda Council on “Poverty and Economic Development” (World Economic Forum).
Prof Ncube is also a Governor of the African Capacity Building Foundation.
Previously, Professor Ncube worked for INVESTEC Asset Management as a Portfolio Manager and Head of Asset Allocation Strategy. He also managed Investec’s Global Managed Fund, an offshore umbrella-fund registered in Ireland. The fund had five other funds under it with investments in US, Japanese and European Equities, bonds and money markets.
Prior to joining the corporate sector, Professor Ncube was a Lecturer in Finance at the London School of Economics, UK, where he taught and supervised undergraduate and graduate students in finance and investments, and general theory of asset pricing.
He has published widely in the area of finance and economics, and some of his papers have won awards. Some of the papers have been published in international journals such as the Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Banking and Finance, Mathematical Finance, Applied Financial Economics, Journal of African Economies, among others. He has also published 4 books, namely: Mathematical Finance; South African Dictionary of Finance; Financial Systems and Monetary Policy in Africa; and Development Dynamics: Theories and Lessons from Zimbabwe; and a book manuscript on Finance and investments in South Africa.
His interests are in golf, reading and painting. He is married to an Engineer with whom they have 4 children.
