Dr. Makgathi Mokwena

Dr. Makgathi is a registered Arts Therapist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, she has taught psychology at two universities (Vista University- now University of Pretoria, and Rand Afrikaans University- now University of Johannesburg).  She has worked as a therapist and coach, and performed professionally on stage.  She has post graduate degrees in Psychology, Speech and Drama and Anthropology at Rhodes University in Grahamstown and Vista University in Pretoria.  She received a Masters Degree in Dance Movement Therapy at Antioch Graduate School in New Hampshire (through a Fulbright Scholarship), and her Doctoral Degree in Psychology at Rand Afrikaans University, in Johannesburg.

Her work centres on personal development, and the self within the context of the larger team/community/system. The paradigm she holds is appreciative and strength-based, oriented towards the belief that we have the capacity for the betterment of the self. Inquiry and reflection are used as essential tools for the enhancement of the understanding and appreciation of self, in order to serve oneself and others. Meaning and purpose (or the search thereof) form a cornerstone of this framework.

Makgathi works in the NGO sector with women, and young people. She helps individuals re-connect with themselves, with their dream, and with the inner energy necessary to pursue and achieve that dream.   Her corporate engagements cover programmes such as Executive Development Programmes, Emerging Leadership Development Programmes, Women in Leadership, Train the Trainer on a number of programmes, Leadership Presence, Leadership for Results, Self-Storying in Stillness Retreats, Mentorship Training Programmes, Business Presentation Skills, various Diversity Training Programme, Having Crucial Conversations, all conducted with clients representing various levels of government, the private sector, academia and civil society.

Makgathi has experience in the following instruments and methodologies: Bar-On EQ assessment, 360 assessments, Cognitive Personality Profile, Assessment Centres, Personality Type Indicator Assessments, Open Space, World Café and Forum Theatre.   When not growing people, Makgathi can be found reading, running and vegetable gardening.
